The theme is; main characters that do not appreciate the ones who deeply love them. What, Wuthering Heights, Hunger Games, and Twilight all have in common is that the whole falling in love and staying together with the under appreciated character in the end never happens. (Links to other two stories below) I am a fan and lover of all the stories above, I just get opinionated.
I want to start off by saying that I am NOT team Gale. I am team Peeta! But I feel that I make a somewhat valid argument about how its not fair that Katniss kicked Gale to the curb. Second I need to say I love Katniss. Don’t hate her just have some opinions…
HUNGER GAMES: OVERVIEW GALE
Katniss lives in a post apocalyptic world of the future. The United States has been broken up into districts 1-12. The capitol is the main rule of government, treating the people of the districts with injustice and corruption. Each district is poorer than the other, district 12 being the poorest. Katniss father pasted away when she was younger and Katniss assumes responsibility of the household. She begins by hunting to provide food and safety for her family.
In her early stages of hunting, Katniss runs into a boy named Gale in the woods. Gale initially annoys her but over time they become best friends. Gale and Katniss are emotionally close to one another and it is clear that Gale grows feelings for Katniss that are more than friendly, however Gale’s feelings are not mutual.
Eventually Katniss volunteers herself in the place of her little sister-Prim for the hunger games. Katniss fights in the hunger games and is away from Gale for the rest of the book. In book two Katniss returns to her district a hero, and continues her friendship with Gale. Unfortunately, Katniss is forced to re-enter the Hunger Games and is yet again wedged from Gale.
Gale and Katniss become finally reacquainted with one another in book three. Katniss, and Gale, along with other survivors live in district 13. Peeta has been captured by the capital and is not present in the book till the middle/end.
Why doesn’t it work out? :
In the beginning Katniss admits to finding Gale attractive but not seeing a real future with him as his wife, and with children. Ever since the death of her father, and her mother’s depression, Katniss emotionally guards herself from the idea of ever falling in love.
In the end, Katniss confesses that Prim’s death is what attributed to her not choosing Gale. Being that it was he made a decision that resulted in Prim’s death. She also says that his and her personalities were too alike, that she needed someone who could balance her out. But it could be argued that there were more reasons why she did not choose Gale. As I mentioned before, Katniss spends a good deal of time without Gale. In the time that Katniss becomes closer to Peeta.
Although she does not officially feel anything more than friendship for Peeta she also admits to being confused and unsure, and mentions on two different occasions kissing him and feeling something strong. Which in turned continued to confuse her about her feelings for Gale.
Lastly Peeta, towards the middle/end of book three is rescued and placed in district 13. Upon his arrival Katniss quickly realizes that Peeta has changed for the worst, brain washed to believe Katniss is evil. Peeta’s condition worries and upsets Katniss; it is then that Gale realizes that he won’t have a fair chance with Katniss until Peeta gets better.
Why does she piss me off? :
Again I will to say that I do like Katniss…A lot…but yes I also have some problems with her.
First of all, as I said, although I am NOT team Gale …this blog is about characters that do not end up with the characters that love them. In all fairness Gale was in Katniss’ life long before she ever got to know Peeta. Katniss knew that Gale had feelings for her and at least in book one she was nice enough to tell him that going away with him was not something she wanted. But in book two she screws that courtesy all up when she decides that she belongs with him, “gale is mine. I am his. Anything else is unthinkable.”
Katniss makes out with Gale on her kitchen table and decides she wants to be with Gale…does she follow through with that? : NOPE
I may not be team Gale but I also think its messed to decide and make someone think you’re going to be with them and cop out on that.
Her indecision was the most annoying part for me. She should have decided to be with one or the other or neither. Yes, you can argue that she a lot to deal with and picking a boyfriend wasn’t exactly top on her list. All right fine, I get that but then why not tell both you’re not interested? She had after all decided she didn’t want to ever get married and have children. So then why string these two guys along, and emotionally mess with them.
Even Peeta and Gale were aware of Katniss’ emotional games. Towards the end of book three Peeta and Gale have a conversation talking about Katniss and whom she will choose in the end. Gale says that Katniss will choose the one she needs to survive, implying that she’s just a user, and Peeta agrees.
She also really pisses me off in the way she treats Peeta but that’s another blog that I might write…
Could it be that she loved him but wasn’t IN love with him? :
Who the hell knows? As previously stated, Katniss decides that she was Gale’s and he is hers… One can only assume that meant she’s IN love with the guy. Not to mention she constantly makes references to him about what he might be thinking watching her kissing Peeta on t.v…. can’t say I would care what one guy thought of me kissing another guy if I didn’t have some strong feelings for the first guy.
Could it have worked out? : I’m going to say no and I’m trying to answer that as unbiased as possible. If hypothetically Katniss never had to go to the hunger games maybe they could have become something but it might not have lasted. Katniss at the very end of the series says, “what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself.”
Gale and Katniss were just too alike, even if they did get a chance together, it probably would not have worked out. Sorry Gale fans.
